Protecting Pollinators
For being such small creatures, pollinators play a huge role in supporting life on Earth. Collectively, they are responsible for more than 80% of crop production worldwide and contribute over $200 billion to the global economy, meaning that without pollinators, our environment, food supply, and economy would collapse. Sadly, human actions have devastated pollinator populations through pollution, habitat loss, and the use of insecticides.
After many hours of planning, I purchased all the supplies and asked for volunteers. On the project work day, we assembled the raised garden bed, filled it with soil, plants, mulch, and plant labels. Then I delivered it to the school, along with a watering can, garden care sheet, a live butterfly kit, and some books for the schoolchildren about pollinators. The following week, I visited the school to meet with some students and share my project with them.
I learned how to plan, develop, and execute a project. There were many things I had to consider, like beneficiary, budget, season, supply inventory, volunteers, safety, and more. Most importantly, I learned that even with the most careful planning, issues pop up, and as a leader, you have to step in to problem solve.
