After 33 years of history, our group was subjected to a challenge after so many others, throughout its broad experience in defending boys scout’s values. The unit was forced to leave from its head office, located in a prime area in downtown with built area for management office and perfect resources for development of scouting techniques, because the property was possession of City Hall in lending, but it declined renewing the land usage contract. As an alternative in order to minimize our losses, they offered us a new land, which is in an area of 8200 square feet, but was utterly debased environmentally and frequented by many drug users. At first, we thought that we would be adversely affected in this agreement, but as a scout never escapes the fight we rolled up our sleeves and started the changes. It was a whole year of arduous work, cleaning entirely polluted areas, lakeside decontaminating and all of this into an area where the city population deposited their debris illegally, even in the street, hindering vehicular traffic. There was constant on-site burning of waste, causing damage to public health and disrupting the coexistence of a nearby kindergarten, constantly being necessary the emergency suspension of classes’ activities due to the fires. Several requests for cleaning the area were made, complains to the environmental department were submitted, we talked with the truck drivers who brought the garbage to avoid dumping in the area and at the same time, requested to the authorities to deal with the drug users and make efforts to set them free of their addictions. But we did not give up. It was an extensive work. And now, we are with the whole population on our side, thanking all along by the work we are doing in the surroundings. The drug users no longer appear in the region, and there is no more garbage disposal, and the venue is again agreeable to eyes of the population. We earned it, we achieved our convictions to change our community and serve as ambassadors of servitude. We are the messengers of peace in our city and we invite you to become on yours!
