Project Orion VI

Project Orion VI

Project Orion VI is the sixth instalment of Project Orion, Rovering with Turtles, and i was lucky enough to be part of it's planning and execution. The focus of Project Orion VI is to kickstart the construction of the new pink house (centre for activities for the local woman's group, the PEWANIS, and our scenic accommodation for the length of the project), while still participating in Turtle conservation and also keeping our project in line with the 3 aims of the Scouts of the world award, environment, development and peace. After the planning for the logistical and financial requirements for the project,we left Singapore for Kampung Mangkuk, Setiu, Terengganu, where we started our 14 day journey. Within the 14 days, Team Orion VI did turtle nest excavations a few times at the nearby turtle hatchery, and through that the team learnt about the importance of turtle conservation and the strategies the WWF employed to do that. The team also did a beach cleanup on the third day, not only keeping the environment of the village a little cleaner, but also doing our part in marine life conservation. On the 8th day we started construction of the new pink house, slowly but surely, the pillars were put in place, and the first few layers of bricks were built. Throughout this 14 days we spent some time with the residents of the village, "helping" to make banana chips, entertaining the children with our passable skills in origami, and learning malay from 5 year olds. After we came back from Terengganu, we organised a post- project activity with a cub scout group, sharing what we've learnt during our time in malaysia in a interactive and fun way, by playing games with the intention of teaching them the importance of the conservation of the environment. In conclusion, this project gave me a new insight to the issues outside Singapore, and showed me that people from very different cultures can live and laugh together.
