Project Orion 3

Project Orion 3

Project Orion 3 was a turtle conservation project in collaboration with WWF-Malaysia, which took place in a village in Terengganu. During the project, my team and I went about beach patrolling, maintained the turtle hatchery, taught the kids English, participated in mangrove replanting and beach cleanup, and painted the houses of the villagers. The village, known as Mangkuk, is a small community with a local school. Being a seaside village, the location is a major nesting site for the Green Turtles, which are in high risk of extinction in the wild. Our main conservation effort was to go on nightly beach patrol with rangers to locate turtle nests and bring the eggs back to the hatchery. At the hatchery, we helped to excavate the nests and thereafter, released the hatchlings into the sea. These were done to ensure higher success rate of hatching and to prevent poaching. It was surprising to know that some of the rangers used to be poachers. However, it was even more inspiring to know that WWF staffs managed to educate the villagers and create alternative employment for them – to work as rangers to protect the Green Turtles. When we returned from the trip, we conducted a sharing session with a group of Cub Scouts to educate them on the impact of litters on marine life. As the saying goes, we only protect what we love, and love what we know. Through education, we hope to pass on our experiences and knowledge to the future generation, to increase their awareness and hopefully inspire them to take further actions when they grow up too.
