President's Team : Chief Scout Hospitality Service
I have participated in the Istana Open House duty for 5 times, and its was mostly a enjoyable and learning experience. We had to help out at the Istana by directing visitors and answering their questions. When i was doing duty at the front gate, some visitors asked if they had to pay to enter the Istana even though they are Singaporean and as time passed the queues became longer. When i was helping out at the ticketing, i had to check if they had the tickets to enter the State room with the help of other scouts. And during the most recent duty during Chinese New Year 2017, I was doing duty at the central gate and in my opinion, central gate duty was the most tiring. As there was 2 different directions to go, most visitors asked what was the difference of going through either gate, and they asked if they could take photos with us and also if we could help to take photos for them. Although it was tiring having to direct visitors for about 4.5 hours every duty, its was not entirely as bad I thought it would be when i first participated. I got to make new friends from different scout groups that were doing the same duty as me. There was also 1 duty where it rained and when i got home, i came down with a fever but that didn't stop me from participating in more duties.
Overall, the most challenging part about he duty was that we had to stand at our duty location for about 5 hours without any breaks. I hope that i can improve my communication with strangers and not be as shy as i was before i participated in this Istana duty, and i also have learnt that a smile and a kind voice is the most important part of greeting strangers. I feel sort of honored doing something that not most scouts can do. While I was doing my duty at the Istana for 5 times, I saw many foreigners that were visiting the Istana for the first time and I also got to interact with some of them and most of them thought that Singapore is a beautiful country and that their trip here was an enjoyable one. Through the Istana duties, I hope that I can make tourists believe that Singaporeans are kind and helpful people and to promote peace between Singaporeans and the tourists from the many different countries. My favourite part about the Istana Duties is that I could make friends with many scouts from many different scout groups and creating new memories with them.
