Kuruman district learns about biodiversity
Kuruman district camp took place in early May. Many children in both Kuruman and Kimberly districts are not exposed to environmental awareness education. The project aimed at addressing awareness around environment and leadership. Nolan believes that leadership skills are best explained when done practically. The project addressed matters affecting the environment such as climate change, biodiversity, conservation as well as leadership and problem solving skills. Materials used for the project included a book by Frank Opie, the Global Scout book, was used for most of the activities presented. Printouts from the book were issued to participants for every activity. One of the young Scouts said `I have a better understanding on why we need to care for the environment and can even make a living out of it by recycling.` Nolan had challenges organizing the second camp, one of these was the poor attendance, but in his own words he has learned that “In future it will be better not to work in areas that are remote as you can never be certain that all the identified beneficiaries will attend. It will be better to work in groups as all Scouts and members will be residing in the same area”.
