Kimberly distinct learns enviroment
Kimberley Country and Kruman districts both based in Northern Cape hosted camps for Scouts on environmental awareness and leadership for the youth. Both projects were led by Nolan van der Merwe. 32 Scouts and 11 volunteers participated in biodiversity walks and in activities on Leadership and problem solving skills. Some of the activities included ideas on how to run and manage a project; these were demonstrated through skits and verbal feedback. Participants were made to experience nature playing different games. The Group partnered with De Beers Consolidated Mines and they assisted them by providing training venue and accommodation. Most volunteers were never involved in hosting such an event, so the camp started off on a very slow pace. Once everyone understood the objectives and purpose of activities, everything ran smoothly. One of the challenges for this group was communication; the group was diverse with Scouts speaking three different languages. The challenge was solved as the volunteers could translate whenever a participant had difficulty in expressing themselves. The need to care for the environment is now better understood by the Group and they have committed themselves to be more involved by sharing ideas and be active in activities that are of benefit to their environment with families and community at large. One of the young Scouters wrote `It impacted my life on how to live with nature and to respect it and to treat the nature and how to live in a clean environment.'
