HYGIENE FOR LIFE MALAWI
Many learners and community members in Malawi lacked access to practical hygiene education and resources. We were inspired to start the Hygiene for Life project to empower youth, teachers, and communities with knowledge and habits that improve health and wellbeing. Using Scouting methods, we wanted learners to actively participate, remember lessons through stories and practical demonstrations, and become Hygiene Champions in their communities.
The project reached multiple regions, including a major outreach at Kabwinja Primary and Secondary Schools,Kaweche primary achools , just to mention few.Scouts trained as ToTs led interactive sessions using the patrol system, practical demonstrations, and hygiene kit distribution. Teachers participated and Scouts were trained in Safe from Harm. FreshWater Project International and Heart to Heart International supported materials, funding, and coordination.
Interactive, hands-on learning is more effective than lectures. Using the Scouting patrol system strengthens teamwork and leadership while teaching. Training Scouts as ToTs builds sustainable capacity for future community outreach. Early engagement with teachers ensures hygiene practices continue in schools. Partnerships with organizations like FreshWater project International and Heart to Heart International are essential for logistics, resources, and project success.
