A Home for Bees
We toured several community gardens managed by a local garden club and they mentioned the need for pollinator homes to help the gardens thrive and protect the bee population from urbanization.
The scouts designed the houses and learned about what a good bee home would need. Then we acquired the wood, learned about the tools, and constructed the frames. We are now working with the garden club to locate good spots in the community gardens and discussing maintenance for the homes.
The project raised awareness with those in the pack as well as sharing our knowledges learned with the garden club. It also helped raise awareness for the importance of pollinators and the impact of youth can have in the community at large. 10 houses were built and added to the community to help protect the lives of bees. According to the USDA bees increase crop yields, as well as beautifying the spaces, and increase native biodiversity. Bees are key to a thriving plant life, and plants are also known to help naturally purify the air we breathe.
The scouts learned about the importance of pollinators on plants and the things that put the pollinators at risk. They also learned about a variety of native species of bees that are not honey bees, and the effects of different products and finishings on wood projects that can be harmful to the surrounding life, both plant and animal.
