Environmental awareness campaign

Mpeta Scout Group is led by Scouter Nonkuthalo Mndai, the Group is based in Butterworth, Eastern Cape. Amongst other delays, the group’s challenge was fencing which delayed the project, the school was not fenced and this was a threat to the Group, because they feared that the live stock was going to destroy the garden. Mpeta had an established garden at school; they wanted to extend it by planting more seed beds to grow vegetables which will be used by the school to help supplement the nutrition program. With the funding, the Group bought insecticides, tools and seedlings. They planted vegetables and the garden produced a variety of vegetables ranging from cabbages, spinach, beetroots, onions, green peppers, tomatoes and carrots to potatoes. The project is helping the Group to help fight poverty and they are hoping to produce more vegetables for the learners and the community at large. The Scouts are now equipped with new knowledge and they have learned how to make trench beds, when to make their own and plant the seedlings and how to produce vegetables. They are proud that during the learning process they were able to advertise scouting within the community. Scouts take turns weeding the garden and removing the drooping leaves to make compost, while others volunteer to water and look after the garden during weekends and school holidays.
