Cub Scout of the 11th Group of Tsuen Wan, New Territories of Hong Kong Experience non-general environmental initiatives: "Polyfoam Recycling Action" and "Shorelines Cleanup Day" 荃灣第11旅幼童軍體驗非一般環保行動:「發泡膠回收行動」及「海岸清潔日」
Seeing that the coastal waters and shores of Hong Kong have been plagued by a large amount of marine debris in recent years, the habitats of hundreds of wild species have been seriously polluted, which is waste plastic.
In order to raise the awareness of the Cubs members of the 11th Group of Tsuen Wan to understand the harmful effects of plastics on the marine environment, it is hoped that the Cub members will "do everything they can" to practice "walking" in daily life and protect the marine ecology. Become a good citizen.
The 11th Group of Tsuen Wan has organized two environmental activities:
First of all, on June 22, 2019, participated in the "Polyfoam recycling action" workshop, let members know that recyclable waste Polyfoam (PS / PE) can be reduced to PS or PE plastic recycled materials.
In the workshop, we learned to identify PS/PE varieties of waste Polyfoam that is recyclable, and go to the factory buildings near the workshop to collect recyclable waste Polyfoam, and learn to classify and remove non-foamed glue on the Polyfoam. (such as label..) and stains, and then observe the workshop staff put the cleaned waste Polyfoam into the machine crushed and hot melt compressed to make recycled plastic bricks weighing about 8 kg.
The workshop staff also showed us samples of PS/PE recycled materials that were blended into rubber particles and remanufactured into interesting pieces, photo frames, hangers, interior decoration materials and other finished products.
Cubs members are very excited and encouraged to recognize that recycled styrofoam is recyclable. They promised to "do everything they can" in the daily practice of "walking out", such as own drinking water pots and tableware.
In response to the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Event "World Environment Day shorelines Cleanup Day 2018-2019", on June 30, 2019, 24 Cubs members, parents and scouters were recruited to go to the Public pier at the Anglers’ Beach in the Sham Tseng section of the New Territories for Beach cleaning.
On that day, we collected a wide variety of garbage scattered on the beach (multiple PP/PET plastic, glass, metal household items, leather boots, rubber slippers, leather syringes, lighters, pillows, drinks bottles and boxes, lunch boxes, PS /PE packaging materials ......etc), more than 80% of plastic waste, so that members and parents are stunned and horrified, the most difficult thing for us to worry is that many fine styrofoam particles and sand mixed together difficult to pick up… Finally, we tried our best to sort the garbage before sending it to the garbage collection station.
The experience of this activity, the Cubs members recognized that the ocean should be clean, and the garbage harming marine life is also harmful to human life. They agree that they need to contribute to the coastal ecological environment, protect the marine and wild species, and are willing to continue to participate in beach cleaning activities. Commit to taking away personal waste when doing activities outdoors.
