Awareness on Nation-wide Plastic Ban

Awareness on Nation-wide Plastic Ban

Mr. Karsang Ugyen, Y-VIA (Young Volunteers in Action) coordinator, created an awareness on the nation wide plastic ban with effect from 1st April after the class. Teachers, support staffs (64) and students (481) from classes VII to XI attended the advocacy programme.

The first plastic ban came into effect in the year 1999 and was again reinforced in 2005 and 2009. The latest reinforcement of plastic ban is going to be enforced by 1st of April 2019 in which National Environment of Bhutan has made announcements through the national media outlets specifically mentioning the ban on sale/use of plastic carry bags, doma wrappers and homemade ice cream pouches in the country.

The ban also comes with penalties for the business stakeholders with a sum of Nu. 500/- for first offence followed by Nu. 1000/- for second offence and cancellation/witholding of business liscence for the third offence. However the customers can reuse the plastics and shall be not penalised.
