AQUAPONIC WORKSHOP (SWA UPDATE 13)

AQUAPONIC WORKSHOP (SWA UPDATE 13)

On 3 June 2016, an aquaponic workshop was conducted in Maahad Tahfiz Muhammadi involving aquaponic experts, the children and us. The workshop's aim is to gain new knowledge and get a better understanding regarding the aquaponic system. This workshop was been organised by IM4U. They send four of their aquaponic experts to supervised and looked at our project order to improve and make it better. Other than having a good time of discussion, we also had a short trip to nearby plant nursery to see and observe the technique used for plantation such as using charcoal and clay-ball.They also made some recommendation to change the roof from plastic sheet to black-pigmented polyester fabric if we had the budget to lessen the direct hit of hot sunlight to the tank and causes the volume of water to less due to evaporation. Other comment that we learn to improve the quality of our plants' growth is by removing the "pokok keladi bunting' in the tank because these plants were the one that get the direct nutrients from the fishes feces. This causes less nutrients content in the flowing water to be absorbed by the kangkung and spinach plants that we plant in the beakers. Thus, it will slow the grow progression of the plants to grow healthy and late to reach maturity. Other than that, the aquaponic experts suggest us to change the medium used to plant from using the coconut coir to charcoal. The reason is, charcoal can be a host for good bacteria that provide and produce nitrogen, a nutrients for plants to grow and stay healthy. These charcoals need to be sink in the tank first in order to make the bacteria stay in the charcoal as their host and grow in numbers for about a week. Only then, the charcoal is suitable for plantation medium. There are a lot of new knowledge that we get in order to improve our project quality regarding aquaponic system and plant growth and development. Although our project has many weaknesses and many improvements need to be done, they praise our efforts in making this project a success because there are a few planting system that using aquaponic style in Malaysia. They also give us an applause and more motivation support for doing the aquaponic project to serve community. We were so happy and determined to improve the project further in order to serve the community better. #SWAward
