And there was light

The project was implemented at the Gilwell Scout centre and Arrow Park. The people who helped with the project were the 5 people on the Gilwell Management Committee. Prior to the implementation of the project, the Group managed to source environmentalist to look at the feasibility of installing solar panels. Their opinion was that both camp sites had too many trees and this would impact on the effectiveness of solar panels. They suggested heat pumps; the challenge with the heat pumps was the cost. Each heat pump was R15,000 and it was not easy getting a supplier who could install the equipment with the amount supplied. A further challenge was getting a subsidy from Eskom who has a large rebate scheme in a form of discounts, where entities who install heat pumps receive a 20% rebate. The rationale from Eskom for this is that it puts less pressure by reducing the consumption alleviating strain on the power grid and the carbon footprint. And by reducing the direct electricity cost, the Group is freeing up capital for more sustainable projects. The effect of this project can be measured by the reduction in the electricity and utilities account. Electricity costs per campsite are the major expense especially when there is a large number of youth camping. The project will benefit the scouting community as there will be a bigger capacity for hot water and the electricity costs will be reduced. Arrowe Park is owned by SCOUTS South Africa and is run jointly by East Rand District Scouters and Phoenix Rover Crew. Gilwell is leased by SCOUTS South Africa from JPC (Johannesburg Property Company) both sites are used by the scout community and other organisations such as welfare groups, churches etc. By keeping the utility costs down the overall costs for the ground will be maintained at a competitive level. The project finally kick started in October 2013 and it was in conjunction with the JOTI/JOTA weekend. The reason for combining these was because of a captive audience. Apart from Scouts there were also Girl Guides and Cubs. Scouts were involved in helping select the site for the installation of the pumps, taking into consideration the position of the sun as well as accessibility to the nearest points in relation to the bathrooms. They were also shown a schematic working of the heat pump cycle. This project directly benefited 2,000 Scouts. From the feedback that was received from the target market people are more aware of conserving energy and our resources. Scouts can play an active role in changing the attitude of people on global environmental issues. The key success factor was changing people’s perceptions regarding the use of alternate energy. The project also complimented the theme for Kon Tiki 2014 which is “Going Green”. Kon Tiki will be held at Arrowe Park on the 16 -18 of May 2014. Each year this event has foot traffic and last year they had 4,500 participants.
