3D2N Bekok camping&River claning
From 11 to 14 December 2015, our troop held a camping trip to a small town called Bekok in Johor where we implemented activities that were related to Messenger of Peace(MOP) that we wanted to carry out.
On the 11th, we took a local train instead of booking a bus to cut down carbon footprints on transportation. Upon reaching Bekok, our troop took a 8km-hike from the train station to the campsite which was located at Hutan Lipur Sungai Bantang. Right after that, we experimented handling our own trash with a personal A5 size zip-lock bag during the entire course of the camping trip. Everyone was well aware of the trash that they produced and always cleaned up the garbage first before packing them into our personal zip-lock bags, which we prepared beforehand. The experimentation was a huge success as we managed to fit each of our own trash into the small and compact zip-lock bag. The result was an efficient way of carrying rubbish out of the campsite.
In addition to taking care of our own trash, our troop also did community service which was cleaning up trash along the Bantang River. We were divided into 4 patrols to target specific areas where littering were more serious. In the end, we had collected over 10 garbage-bag sized trash from the river. We learned the importance of individual morality, awareness and diligence that are required elements for banishing pollution. Littering is something that should not be done and is a message that should be spread around.
On our last day at Sungai Bantang, we separated our trash into different types for the designated garbage bins. This camping trip had given us a chance to put our idea into action and we certainly would like to contribute and continue our little effort to our mother nature, as our troop’s focus on MOP mission will be largely based upon protecting our environment for the next generation to come.
