Operation Code Blue
My church has a program called the Community Luncheon that provides meals, clothes, and other services to people in need. This part of New Jersey does not have an emergency shelter to help people when it is dangerously cold, so people have been coming to the church for blankets, jackets, gloves and anything else to keep themselves warm. I also learned that the Community Luncheon was running low on toiletries to hand out to people.
My Troop made 100 toiletry kits and 50 cold weather bags for people in need. The cold weather bags included a blanket, hat, gloves, scarf, bath towel and socks. The toiletry kits had soap, shampoo, a comb, shaving cream, razor, deodorant, and wash cloth. My Dad's company offers grants to help community projects so I wrote up the paperwork to get it. The Scouts put the kits together at a meeting. Then we went to the Community Luncheon to hand out the kits and help serve lunch.
The county where my church is based is the only one in my state that does not have an emergency shelter for people to go to when it gets dangerously cold, so I learned that other groups need to step up and help where they can. We also got to meet a lot of great people by volunteering to hand out the kits we made. Assembling the kits was a fun project but getting to meet the people we are helping was really special.
