Mokone PS - Stories That Build Strong Foundations
The team set out to create a reading culture where learners read for understanding, enjoy writing, and appreciate the importance of literacy. Their goal was to build comprehension, spark curiosity, and show learners how reading can open future opportunities and academic success.
Yeboneers ran reading, comprehension and writing activities, including obtaining a library card which learners found engaging. Practical exercises encouraged participation and confidence-building. Task 8 was difficult at times because many learners forgot their birth certificates, limiting library-card registration for some participants.
The team observed that many learners cannot yet read for meaning and are anxious about reading aloud. They learned the value of motivation, patience, and creating a positive literacy culture. Limited parent support with library forms reduced card uptake, highlighting a need for stronger community involvement.
