Simonstown Grave Cleaning

Dana von Eckardstein, a Springbok Scout, led a patrol project to revamp and maintain graves at the Simon's Town Lower North Cemetery (Simon's Town Urn Wall/Memorial). Originally started by Dominic Nicholas, this initiative continues as a Scout legacy project. By clearing away years of sand, grass, and overgrowth, the project successfully restored the graves, helping families find closure and reunite with the resting places of their loved ones.
Led by Springbok Scout Dana von Eckardstein, the patrol spent weekends restoring and maintaining graves at the Simon's Town cemetery. The team cleared invasive weeds, plants, and grass to reveal hidden grave borders and excavated numerous sites entirely buried by sand erosion. In addition to general restoration, the patrol maintained a specific group of 13 recent graves belonging to higher-ranking military members at the request of the memorial centre.
Led by Springbok Scout Dana von Eckardstein, the patrol project highlighted the importance of honouring people's legacies, whether they are living or deceased. Recognizing that many individuals no longer have living relatives to tend to their graves, the Scouts took on this responsibility. By restoring these final resting places, the initiative aimed to revive the memory and spirits of those who might otherwise be forgotten.
