Renewable Energy, reduce, re-use & recycle
Forty parents, Scout and Cubs from the 1st Merrydale Group in Mitchell‟s Plain teamed up with 50 non-Scouts to implement a recycling project in their community. They focused on renewable energy and reduction, re-usage and recycling of waste.
In preparation for the project the Group received generous support from the Environmental Resource Management department (ERMD) who supplied them with books to learn about waste management. The Group, led by Scouter Debra Petersen, visited the Athlone Refuse Service station (ARTS), where they learned about the processes involved in separating waste material. At the end of the excursion they had learned arts and craft as well as business skills for their project. Most importantly, while learning, everyone had great fun!
Equipped with the new knowledge the Group planned and hosted an arts and craft workshop for the community. Seeing as Earth hour was dawning they decided to incorporate this in their plans. Being prepared at its best! The Cubs and Scouts created lanterns from tins and 2 liter plastic bottles and gave a presentation on their art work. They also informed their community about saving electricity.
At the end of a long day the Group realized that the project had the potential to produce lifelong benefits. Not only will it help in making the environment cleaner for the future generation, but it might even create job opportunities! The Group plan to continue with the project and one of their plans is to host arts and craft workshops once a month.
