Reflection:
Overall, the event was smooth sailing and there were not much things to improve as we have to adapt to the conditions and we have prepared to the best of our ability having the scout promise in mind “On my honour, I promise to do my best”.
After Project Orion ended, I not only managed to learn more about planning and leading but how to do it more effectively where it is short and simple but brings out the main points. This opportunity has also allowed me to learn more about myself and also another part of scouting. I am extremely thankful to have this opportunity to be able to take on this project and also serve the association and more importantly the community at large in my own little way. Though there were various obstacles along the way, it was really a great learning opportunity for myself and my team and I really couldn’t have done it without the support of my team and many other people. If there is one experience I always remember it would really be the night when I went beach patrolling, it was really lost for words to be able to see such a huge turtle about 80 years old being able to come up to the shore feeling safe on laying its eggs, it was really a rare moment where I believe not many individual gets to witness and understand how much it really means to see what your doing help the wildlife.
Inspire
I would say the discovery workshop I attended for Scouts of the World Award in 2015 really sparked me to really contribute back to the world and there were many more ways to contribute apart from the one I knew, community service and just going to old folks home. You can do different stuff like coastal clean up, kayaking clean up, spread awareness about the topic too.
Lead
There were a few projects in mind which I wanted to get involved and one was The Ubin Project and what it does is replant trees that have been burnt, chopped, etc. In the long term it helps the ecosystem as not only do you have trees to keep the soil together to prevent soil erosion but it gives birth to a whole new ecosystem as it means animals and also different species of plants and grow and flourish. For me it was a good experience though you can't see the effects instantly but it is the long term that matters
Do
I really learnt a lot from going through the project from the planning phases to the post project over the period of 6 months and it was really worth it to sacrifices time for this because there is nothing I would trade for the valuable experience and friendships that I gained during the trip. It really gave me an opportunity to lead and also contribute back to society
Share
During the post project, we shared our experiences to our juniors about what the project does and how it helps the community and also the wildlife. There were many hardships to go through and one thing we all had to deal with was 14 days away from home and also limited technology use but this was really my great escape and this is what scouting I feel is really about, leave behind and just enjoy nature as a whole and contribute back to make this place a better world.
