Plastic-Free Future: Youth in Action
Seeing the heavy accumulation of single-use plastic litter in our local community and its impact on the environment deeply concerned me. Guided by Scout values and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 12 & 15), I was inspired to create an initiative that empowers youth and local residents to reduce plastic consumption and adopt eco-friendly habits.
The project was executed in four steps:
First, we mapped plastic litter hotspots in our local community. Second, we conducted awareness sessions for vendors and residents on sustainable alternatives. Third, we organized an environmental clean-up drive to collect and segregate plastic waste. Finally, we distributed reusable cloth bags to shopkeepers and urged citizens to pledge against using single-use plastics.
Executing this project taught me that driving community change requires patience, effective communication, and practical solutions. I learned how to lead team activities, engage constructively with local vendors, and overcome resistance by highlighting the long-term benefits of reusable alternatives. Most importantly, it reinforced my belief in scout-led community action—showing that youth can actively drive sustainable change towards SDG 12.
