Pack 173 LNT Adopts Atkinson Forest Preserve
As part of learning about Outdoor Ethics and doing service to earn the Leave No Trace Award Pack 173 of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Fairfield, Illinois adopted Atkinson Forest Preserve in a partnership with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The original project called for clearing trails and cleaning up trash with a capstone of posting a sign with the six fundamentals of Leave No Trace to encourage visitors to practice.
Pack 173 still annually uses Atkinson Forest Preserve for an outdoor classroom for rank advancement and service projects.
Recently the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has worked with local government to transfer maintenance of Atkinson Forest Preserve to the City of Fairfield and Fairfield Park District. Pack 173 is proud to have a seat on the steering committee for this project to further develop Atkinson Forest Preserve with local and private resources. Alumni of Pack 173 will likely have Eagle Scout projects associated with this partnership and the impact of our service to Atkinson Forest will be generational.
