Madiun Literacy Ranger 2023
The Covid-19 pandemic has caused various problems in our lives, one of which is education. One of the problems in education, is the declining ability and interest in children's literacy. This project aims to increase elementary school students' literacy skills and interests in rural areas, one of which is Kare Village, Madiun Regency, Indonesia. This project supported by Global Youth Mobilization, included Big-6 Youth Organization, World Health Organization, and United Nations Foundation.
The target location of this project is SDN Kare 6 (State Elementary School Kare 6), Madiun, East Java, Indonesia. The programs consist of books donation, reading together using the read-aloud method, literacy of children’s human rights, creating wall magazines about future dreams, and renovation of the school library. This project collaborates with an elementary school, local governments, Scouts, and local youth to create a sustainable effect in the future. The process of this project started in November 2022. The beginning of this project was data assessment and survey to get a suitable target location. The survey was implemented for 2 months until the end of December 2022. After finding the right target location, the main activities were executed during January 2023. After the main activities were carried out, the team also monitored and evaluated for the next 3 months.
Amount 100 beneficiaries are reached, consisting of local youth and elementary school students. The read-aloud method hoped can improve students' reading ability. This project also expected the children will be aware of their rights in the family, school, and society. Renovation of the school library will also be sustainable for this program. The library will be an opportunity for students to get access to books for free and easily.
The focus of this project is how to increase the literacy interest of primary school students and encourage local youth movements to contribute to education in their hometown. Besides that, this project is the beginning of the "Madiun Literacy Ranger". In the future, we will plan a similar program in other target locations that face problems in literacy and education. Collaboration and support from various parties are needed to support the success of this project.
