Indigenous Plants and Vegetable Garden

Mpeta Group based in Eastern Cape started an Indigenous Plants and Vegetable Garden, the group is led by Scouter Nonkuthalo Mndai. Project started in August 2012 and it is ongoing. The group bought seedlings and used other funding to fence a 36m x 32m plot, with enriched soil by finding kraal manure from the community made of sways for water management. They divided plots for planting different vegetables. Prepared soil for indigenous plants and then collected identified indigenous plants from the wild. With the help of community members they planted plants for the use at school for indigenous knowledge. While working on the project the Group experienced delays in preparing the garden due to the abundance of rain which made it difficult to work and the end of the year examinations which made it difficult to get the both Scouts and learners to be always hands on in the project. The school worked hand in hand with the group and some of the learners that were involved in the project are now having vegetable gardens in their homes. Others have also planted each a peach tree which the Group leader made available to them. Mpeta Group plan to have vegetables for the school nutrition programme at the beginning of the year 2013. They have two volunteers to take care of the garden by weeding and irrigating during school holidays, the community showed interest and appreciation on the work done by the Group. This project has caused people involved to think beyond and as a result the Group has planned to start a nursery in 2013. With the nursery they would like to produce their own seedlings for the learners and the community. While working on the project a relationship between the school management team, coordinators, learners, community and the other staff members has improved.
