Hazy and Inyamazane district organised a workshop led by Sam Lephoko. About 256 Scouts and Rovers were involved in the Indigenous Plants Project. Pack Scouter Mduduzi Ngomane from 1st Numbi in the Hazy district and two environmental teachers implemented a workshop on 4 different types of plants namely invasive alien plants that need to be removed, alien plants that need permission to be planted, alien plants that shouldn’t be added anymore and indigenous plants. Mduduzi Ngomane has good environmental background knowledge in biodiversity. He was a Climate Change ambassador in Germany in 2011. Mduduzi’s presentation was very interesting it motivated the Scouts to learn more about the subject of biodiversity in South Africa. He asked questions to find out, how much the children knew about the subject and used posters in the presentation so that the children would be able to identify the different plants. The presentation focused on the identification of the indigenous plants and 3 categories of alien plants and their threats to local biodiversity. After the presentation the group went around to identify the alien plants around the ranch farm premises in White River. Scouts were able to identify the plants they had seen on the posters during the presentation. The Scouts had a lot of fun identifying and learning about the different alien plants.
