Greening Kajiado West Sub-county
During a workshop session for Scout Leaders who will lead the implementation of the Green Skills grant, we explored the trends driving climate change, and it opened my eyes to how deeply human behavior affects the environment. Tree planting stood out as one of the most accessible and effective ways to take action. Planting trees can accelerate reforestation, support biodiversity, and help restore soil and water systems. It’s a small act, but one that holds so much power.
I reached out to the Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Wildlife Service in Kajiado West Sub-county, who generously offered in-kind support, providing tree seedlings and transport to the planting site. I engaged several schools, involving both students and teachers. I facilitated an awareness session on the importance of protecting nature and biodiversity, highlighting how small, consistent actions can create a lasting environmental impact.
Planting trees is a one-day event, but sustaining them requires a better plan.To ensure this sustainability, I worked with the students to develop care rosters so the trees could be nurtured and monitored regularly.
Additionally, I learnt the importance of facilitating awareness with community members I engaged with, as not all may be aware on the impact of their actions.
