Scouts & Locals Tackle Waste” on WED 2025, Kilifi County
On 5th June 2025, the community of Kilifi Town in Kilifi County came together to mark World Environment Day (WED) through an impactful and engaging event. The theme for the day focused on creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment through collective action.
This event brought together 700 members of the community, including 150 scouts from different schools and scout groups. The main activity of the day was a town-wide clean-up, which saw people from different backgrounds working side by side to remove waste from public spaces. The energy, teamwork, and commitment shown by everyone – especially the scouts – made the event a success and a powerful reminder of the role we all play in protecting our environment.
Summary of Waste Collected: A total of 1,345.3 kilograms of waste was collected during the day’s activities. Here's how the clean-up efforts broke down:
Town clean-up by all stakeholders: 610.5 kgs
Korosho Comprehensive School: 410 kgs
St. Thomas Comprehensive School: 156.2 kgs
Kilifi Comprehensive School: 28.4 kgs
Mtondia Comprehensive School: 120.5 kgs
Kiwandani Comprehensive School: 28.2 kgs
After sorting, the waste collected was classified into:
Plastic waste: 762.1 kgs
Organic waste: 583.2 kgs
This joint effort not only cleaned up Kilifi town but also helped raise awareness on proper waste management, especially the importance of reducing plastic use and embracing better waste disposal habits.
The scouts played a key role, showing leadership, discipline, and environmental responsibility. Together, we made a difference — and showed that when a community unites for the environment, the impact is powerful.
Also to note is that we covered only 3km square under 2hrs.
