International Day of Peace

On September 21st, Lumang Primary School buzzed with excitement as it prepared to celebrate the International Day of Peace. This year, the event “Peace Sports Day” was chosen to promote unity, teamwork, and cultural appreciation through traditional games from Bhutan. The event aimed to foster a spirit of camaraderie among students while embracing the values of peace and cooperation. The celebration kicked off with national anthem followed by scout anthem in the school’s large football ground. The Coordinator, Mrs. Samten Zangmo, welcomed the Principal, students, teachers, and parents, emphasizing the significance of sports in promoting harmony and understanding among diverse cultures. “Sports have the power to unite us, regardless of our backgrounds or differences,” she declared, urging everyone to participate wholeheartedly and embrace the spirit of friendly competition. The school enrolled new scout members and the Scout Commissioner awarded proficiency badges to deserving students who passed the scout test and fulfilled the criteria. Then various sport activities (Tug of war, Balloon blasting) and competitions (Rely race, 100m race, Jigdum, Soksum, Long jump, High Jump) were played where students laughed, enjoyed and got engaged into peace world. In between the sport activities, the lower primary student performed an aerobic dance to entertain the crowd and advocate on physical health and well-being. As the day drew to a close, all students gathered for a final ceremony. Mr. Dawa Gyeltshen, along with guests, teachers and student representatives, led a “Peace Pledge” initiative. With hands raised, students vowed to cultivate a culture of peace within their school and communities. They promised to stand against bullying, promote kindness, and engage in acts of service. The event ended with group photo session (Peace Pictures and pledges) holding the pledge papers contributing to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
