Diving deep to see beyond the tip of the Iceberg
As part of their journey to become innovators, the Scouts from Pulung Santol National High School had a deeper look at the problems in their community through the Systems Iceberg activity. They identified issues that are of concern to the community and tried to see the whole system and not just the issue per se.
As a fruit of their discussion, they were able to identify several problems occurring in their community and decided to focus on two themes, which are: drainage problems caused by improper waste segregation, and youth with difficulties in reading.
Despite not being able to visit and roam around the community due to excessive heat at the time, the Scouts were still able to recognize the problem existing in their community through the collaboration of ideas and empathy for their community members.
“Before, I never really thought about the issues that affect our community. This experience taught me the importance of community involvement and taking care of our surroundings. I hope we can work together to address these issues and create a better environment for everyone.” -Ailin
It's amazing to see how aware our youth are of the problems in their community. Sometimes, we only need to listen and see the works of empathy.
