Street children - Building future

Akha ingomuso lethu “Building our future” is a project led by two Scouters, Sally and Chantal. The two leaders started a Scouting Group at the Children in Distress Home, an organisation that currently looks after 459 orphaned and vulnerable children and their 242 Care Givers who are in distress due to poverty. These children are being cared for by relatives and distant relatives or elderly people with little means of support who live in the Mganduzweni, Jerusalem, Cho cho cho, Chweni and Phelandaba areas in Mpumalanga. The Children‟s home offers educational program and is committed to the development of the children through their program on a long term basis until the children leave school, and then they are replaced by others in distress. (For more information visit: (www.childrenindistress.co.za.) The group was able to open a Troop named 1st Cho Cho Cho Community Scout Group. The Group meets every Friday afternoon from 14h00 till 15h30, at the meetings children are taught about Scouting. They learn the Scouting history, values, principles and laws, the procedures and Scout methods. They are taught this to help improve their life skills, learn new information and play educational games whilst having great fun. Since the Group started a number of new children have shown interest and joined the group, and thus far the group has more than 25 new Scout members. Furthermore, two Scouts had an opportunity to attend the Patrol Leader Training Course (PLTC) that took place from the 29th of June to the 2nd of July. The theme of the course was to teach the young leaders how to become responsible leaders. The Group used their funds to buy two Starter Kits that included amongst others equipment balls, books, colour pencils and ropes. The staff at the „Children in Distress Home‟ is keen to learn more about Scouting. They said that Scouting has opened perspective at Cho Cho Cho community and they would like to expand the cooperation in the near future and to open Scout units at other centres.
