Pumpkins for Piggies

I was inspired last year when I heard that animals like to snack on pumpkins in the fall. I did the project last year, but improved it this year so we could feed more animals and keep pumpkins out of landfills and not go to waste.
Picked out 2 pickup dates & scheduled them with the neighborhood & Tribe. We sent reminders before the scheduled pickups. We went around each street in our neighborhoods & loaded the cars full of pumpkins. We did this on the two main dates and then sometimes in between if people had specific requested pickup dates. Overall, we filled up 6 cars full. We then drove over to Tribe Animal Sanctuary and unloaded all the pumpkins. It took 4 or 5 trips over 2 weeks.
I learned that pumpkins are heavier than you think. The FDA has ensured that stickers that are placed on pumpkins are edible and won't hurt the animals. It's hard to pack round pumpkins into square cars. Animals love eating pumpkins as snacks and it takes a lot of work to feed them. I also realized how much waste there would have been if people threw their pumpkins away instead of donating them to the animals.
