Owl Houses for Henley

Having grown up in Henley on Klip all my life, I have grown accustomed to seeing the wildlife that co-inhabits the conservancy area we call home. Over the years, I have witnessed the development of the southern areas of Alberton as urban sprawl threatens the natural areas of the south. Animals like barn owls have had to migrate as the natural veld is now being developed. By creating a healthy environment for barn owls, we can help maintain a thriving ecosystem and protect our local wildlife.
I built from scratch 8 owl houses to be given to residents of Henley on Klip and surrounding areas for the owl population. I built the owl houses with the help and support of the senior and older scouts within the scout troop. To allow the junior scouts to take part in the project, I varnished and sealed the owl houses with the help of the younger scouts.
Barn owls play an important role in naturally maintaining low rodent populations. By building the owl boxes for our area, we can provide a safe and suitable home for these amazing creatures. Owl boxes are structures that mimic the natural nesting sites of barn owls and provide them with a secure place to roost, breed, and raise their young. By creating a healthy environment for barn owls, we can help maintain a thriving ecosystem and protect our local wildlife.
Mix the varnish well before you start Make sure our boys have clear verbal instruction at each step of building; they don’t like to read written instructions or referring to prior built ones as examples. “Owls don’t have tape measures” “Owls can’t be picky they’re getting free housing” “These are free houses; they can’t complain about the colour.”
