Nigerian Plastic Tide Turners Challenge
What inspired me to start this project was the need to create meaningful youth programs in the NSO and address plastic pollution in Nigeria. I saw an opportunity to bring scouts together, train them as environmental ambassadors, and equip them to lead plastic tide initiatives in their zones, reaching hundreds of young people and creating a real impact in their communities.
We executed the project by bringing together 30 scouts from 23 states for a training program in Edo State. Participants were trained on plastic audits, project planning, digital advocacy, and using scout.org. They then developed action plans to organize Plastic Tide initiatives in their zones, targeting about 1,200 scouts, including Cubs, Ventures, and Explorers, to raise awareness and drive environmental action.
Through this project, I learned that youth can drive real environmental change when given the right skills and support. Collaboration across states multiplies impact, planning is key to successful initiatives, and training scouts as ambassadors ensures sustainability. I also saw the importance of digital tools and advocacy in spreading awareness and engaging communities effectively.
