Conservation and Biodiversity
Our Cub Hall is located within the Palmiet Nature Reserve. Through hands-on projects in collaboration with the Wardens, we taught the Cubs about climate change, biodiversity, and the threat of alien invader plants. We launched initiatives to remove invasive species and restore the reserve's natural balance. After hearing about the Friends of Dawncliff's cleanup project in Portman Park, we teamed up with local residents to help tidy the park, ensuring it remains a space for everyone.
The project was organised with input from all parties involved, with dates selected for maximum convenience. The Cubs participated in a variety of tasks, including varnishing the walkway, removing algae from the fish pond, and clearing alien invader plants from the reserve. These hands-on tasks not only contributed to environmental conservation but also helped the Cubs learn about the importance of preserving natural spaces for future generations.
Through the projects, we learned the importance of community collaboration and the positive impact one can make when working together. The Cubs gained hands-on experience in environmental conservation, understanding how small actions—like removing invasive plants or cleaning a pond—can contribute to the health of local ecosystems. They also learnt about the delicate balance of biodiversity and the need to protect natural spaces for future generations.
