1st Durbanville Scout Creates New Hiking Route
Samuel Higham was inspired to develop a new hiking route for his Springbok Community Service Project so that Scouts could take in a completely new landscape to the usual hiking routes available in the Western Cape. His new hiking route in the Tankwa Karoo ticks all the boxes!
A team of 1st Durbanville Scouts created a new hiking route in the Tankwa Karoo which will benefit the Scouting movement. The project required extensive planning and practical work. The team installed a permanent a water point for hikers, installed directional signs to guide visitors from the main road to the hiking route's starting point and created an interactive geocaching experience that will allow hikers to solve a murder mystery over the course of the hike.
Samuel’s project required extensive planning, research, creativity, and practical work to create a safe, engaging, and enjoyable experience for future hikers and in the process he and his team learned several new skills such as developing a website, creating and logging geocaches, and installing a waterpoint and directional signs for hikers. When the members of a volunteer team put in a few hours over a period of time, the resultant project is astonishing!
