Scouts Learn the Art of Batik
In a collaborative effort to preserve cultural heritage and foster entrepreneurial skills, Gerakan Pramuka Kwartir Ranting Tangerang, in partnership with PT Serasi Autoraya (SERA), held a Batik Tulis (hand-drawn batik) workshop for 40 Scout members on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the Kelapa Indah Subdistrict Office, Tangerang City.
The training introduced participants to the rich tradition of batik making, focusing specifically on batik tulis, a manual method that involves drawing wax patterns on fabric. The session began with an overview of the history, philosophy, and techniques behind batik tulis, followed by a hands-on experience where each participant created their own batik design on a 40x40 cm white cloth.
Participants practiced the traditional process of applying hot wax with a canting (a pen-like batik tool), followed by coloring and "lorot", the final stage where the wax is removed to reveal the finished design. At the end of the workshop, each participant proudly took home their handmade batik artwork.
The decision to focus on batik tulis was twofold: not only does it serve as a means to preserve Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, but it also empowers Scout members with the knowledge and skills to turn batik-making into a potential source of income. This initiative highlights the Scouts’ commitment to cultural appreciation and creative entrepreneurship in a modern context.
