Westpoort Primary reading opens doors
The Scouting-in-Schools team at Westpoort Primary wanted learners to gain access to online resources and digital content, while also improving dictionary and reading skills. Qawekazi Kuselo explained that the project helped learners understand how to find meanings, explore content independently, and develop comprehension skills. The initiative aimed to make literacy engaging and give learners tools to study, explore ideas, and strengthen their confidence in reading.
Learners practised using a library card, explored book classification, and learned how to find information online and in dictionaries. They read and wrote short stories, discussed meanings of words, and worked in teams to complete activities. The Yeboneers guided each step, helping learners navigate resources, understand library systems, and participate actively in literacy exercises.
Qawekazi Kuselo noted that owning a library card gave learners access to books and online resources anytime, boosting their confidence. Challenges included fees when cards were lost, but overall learners enjoyed discovering how dictionaries and libraries work. The project highlighted the value of teamwork, independent research, and practical guidance in improving reading skills and understanding.
