TOWARDS A PLASTIC-POLLUTION REDUCED LAKE VICTORIA

Thousands of tons of plastic waste infiltrate lake Victoria each year, threatening both the environment and the communities that depend on its resources, this pollution, coming from our over-dependence on plastic material products, irresponsible & unconscious littering, the unawareness state on the pollution effects and predicted negative effects lingering, has made plastic pollution a global menace, calling for immediate actions toward mitigating these impacts.

To mark the International Youth Week 2025, we embarked on an awareness creation & call-for-action campaign and clean-up exercise at Usoma Beach on Lake Victoria. The activity tagged "Towards a reduced plastic-polluted Lake Victoria" brought together youths, rovers scouts, environmental conservation organizations, youth-led organizations and community members-with zeal, desire and commitment to reclaim back Lake Victoria from pollution.

The success of restoring back Lake Victoria hinges on active participation from community members-engaging locals encourage a sense of ownership and responsibility for their environment. Hands-on Experience-Participating in a clean-up exercise portrays the direct impact of pollution and strengthens the need for ongoing conservation and rehabilitation practices on the lake. It also provides tangible results that motivate future actions.
