Thembalethu Primary literacy adventure
The Scouting-in-Schools Team aimed to help learners at Thembalethu Primary improve reading and comprehension skills. Many struggled with reading for meaning or discovering new words. Motivated by the goal to “help pupils improve their reading and to read for meaning,” the Yeboneers focused on guiding learners, introducing new books, and providing support to those who needed extra encouragement in a hands-on, engaging literacy program.
Learners engaged in registering for library cards, visiting the library, exploring book classification, finding information, reading and writing short stories, learning parts of speech, and using dictionaries. Yeboneers provided guidance, particularly for learners who were hesitant or struggling, helping them practice reading and understanding texts. The program encouraged participation, curiosity, and confidence, while Scouts supported learners every step of the way.
The project showed that targeted literacy activities can boost learners’ confidence and understanding. Some learners improved visibly, while others needed encouragement to start reading. Yeboneers saw the importance of being part of the solution for struggling readers. Overall, the program reinforced that consistent guidance, hands-on practice, and support from Scouts and teachers help learners engage with reading and develop essential skills.
