St Paul’s Primary Literacy Boost

The Scouting-in-Schools Team wanted to help learners at St Paul’s Primary improve reading and literature skills. Many learners struggled with understanding texts and context. Motivated by the goal to encourage a love for reading, the team focused on activities that strengthened comprehension, reading confidence, and curiosity, ensuring that learners could enjoy reading while building essential literacy skills.
Learners engaged in registering for library cards, visiting the library, finding information, reading and writing short stories, learning parts of speech, and using dictionaries. Yeboneers also invited the library to the school to make literacy more accessible. Learners participated actively and gained confidence in reading and understanding texts, while Yeboneers provided guidance and encouragement throughout each activity.
The project highlighted that learners benefit greatly from structured, hands-on literacy activities. Many gained confidence in reading, comprehension, and writing. Yeboneers learned that reading expands knowledge and broadens understanding, reinforcing the importance of fostering a love for literature early. Support from teachers and the principal helped ensure a positive, engaging experience for all involved.
