St. Mary’s Primary Reading Adventure
The Scouting-in-Schools Team wanted to help learners at St. Mary’s Primary enjoy reading and gain confidence with language skills. Inspired by the goal to “teach learners to read,” the team focused on practical, hands-on activities to strengthen reading, writing, and comprehension. Feedback from Yeboneers emphasized that learners often take in far more than expected, motivating the team to provide engaging and supportive literacy experiences tailored to each child.
Learners participated in library and classroom activities: registering for library cards, visiting the library to learn book classification, finding information, reading and writing short stories, and using dictionaries. Yeboneers guided learners throughout, helping those who were shy or struggling. As Yeboneers noted, “the learners enjoyed the adventure” and actively engaged with the activities, gaining confidence and building literacy skills in a supportive environment.
The project reinforced that learners are eager to participate when given support and practical activities. Many gained confidence in reading, writing, and language skills. Yeboneers observed that learners “take in a lot more than we think,” highlighting the value of hands-on learning. Overall, the project confirmed that encouragement, structured guidance, and fun literacy activities help learners grow while also benefiting the Scouts who facilitated the sessions.
