Serving with Purpose: Building Leadership Through Community Service
The project was inspired by the desire to serve the community while developing important personal and leadership qualities. We wanted to become more responsible, disciplined, confident, and capable of taking initiative without depending on constant supervision. The opportunity to work together in a real community setting also motivated us to strengthen our teamwork, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Most importantly, the project allowed us to put the Scout values of service, responsibility, cooperation, and leadership into practice while making a meaningful contribution to the community.
The community service project was conducted on 21 March at Karma Leksheyling, with the participation of 25 students over a period of approximately six hours. The students worked together to clean and maintain the surrounding areas by collecting and properly disposing of waste, clearing overgrown grass and weeds, removing unwanted materials, and cleaning pathways and common spaces. The activities were organized through teamwork, with students taking responsibility for different tasks and supporting one another throughout the programme. By working cooperatively and efficiently, the participants were able to improve the cleanliness and appearance of the community while gaining practical experience in leadership, coordination, and service.
The project had a positive impact on both the community and the students who participated. It helped create a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming environment at Karma Leksheyling while reducing waste and improving the condition of pathways and common areas. For the students, the project strengthened leadership, teamwork, communication, discipline, responsibility, and initiative through practical community service. It also encouraged participants to understand that serving the community does not always require large-scale activities; consistent small actions, when carried out collectively with commitment and care, can make a visible and lasting difference.
Through this project, we learned that effective community service requires teamwork, commitment, proper communication, time management, and a willingness to take responsibility. We developed greater confidence in working together, learned to divide tasks according to our abilities, and understood that even small individual contributions can create a meaningful collective impact. We also gained greater respect for cleanliness, environmental responsibility, and community service. To improve the project in the future, we would plan the activities in advance, assign clear responsibilities, involve more community members, provide the necessary tools and safety guidance, and arrange follow-up visits to ensure that the area remains clean and well maintained.
