Northwood PS building readers for life

Through Scouting-in-Schools, learners at Northwood Primary were offered a chance to improve reading comprehension and discover new authors. The project highlighted the importance of literacy for personal growth and aimed to make reading fun, engaging, and accessible for Scouts experiencing a library for the first time.
Learners registered library cards, explored book classification, read and wrote stories, learned to find information, and practiced using dictionaries. Scouts guided and encouraged participation, adapting tasks for those who struggled to ensure every learner could take part.
The project showed that even hesitant learners could be engaged with encouragement. Challenges included keeping activities fun and completing all tasks on time. Scouts learned patience, teamwork, and how to adjust support for diverse learning abilities, resulting in improved reading enthusiasm and memorable library experiences.
