Mitchells Heights PS building readers

The Scouting-in-Schools team at Mitchells Heights Primary wanted to help learners grow their English language confidence and deepen their understanding of familiar concepts. As Sharfa Domingo explained, the project aimed to get learners more involved, share ideas with peers, and explore knowledge in greater detail. This inspired the team to support learners who needed extra encouragement and create space for meaningful learning.
Learners took part in a series of literacy activities, including using a library, reading stories aloud, writing short stories, practising dictionary skills, and revising basic language concepts. Each activity was short and focused, allowing learners to participate at their own pace. The programme encouraged discussion, expression, and practising new skills in a supportive environment.
Sharfa found that many learners struggled with spelling and reading, which meant they needed extra time and patience. She learned that every learner progresses differently and that understanding their needs improves results. Asking for feedback helped guide improvements, and seeing learners share stories with enthusiasm showed how valuable this support was.
