Merrydale PS growing a culture of reading

The Scouting-in-Schools team wanted to encourage learners at Merrydale Primary to develop reading skills and build confidence. Many learners struggled with reading, so the project aimed to create an engaging, supportive environment where Scouts could guide learners, spark curiosity, and inspire a love for books.
Learners explored reading through library visits, storytelling, writing short stories, learning parts of speech, and using dictionaries. Yeboneers provided guidance and support, helping learners stay engaged and complete tasks while reinforcing comprehension, creativity, and literacy skills.
The project revealed that creating fun, hands-on reading experiences increases engagement. Some learners found tasks challenging or boring, but support helped them participate. Scouts learned patience and how to adapt teaching methods, fostering reading confidence and encouraging lifelong learning.
