Local Learning Project (Alpine SSL)
A group of us wanted to create a workshop based day where primary school students of the ages prep-year 6 could learn about a range of important skills used in day to day life such as feedback, collaboration, identity and resilience. The project was created with the intent that primary school students would be exposed to these ideas earlier and benefit from using the in their life.
Our project was implemented at Alpine School for Student Leadership. To ensure that our project was successful we divided ourselves in different groups so that we would have a range of workshops. The journey to creating this program involved us discussing what topics primary school students could benefit from and how we would organise the day so that it was interactive and engaging. The program ran for the whole day and we were even able to interact with the students in between the workshops.
The impact was exposing primary school students to more complex ideas that would be useful later in their lives. The idea was that if we were able to introduce these concepts to them that they would have more time to develop these skills and be able to use them more fluently. Therefore the impact was a significant change in the way the went about doing different activities and how they participated in the workshops. Evidently as the day went on more and more students had open minds.
Through this project I learnt how difficult as well as important it is to organise an event as well as manage it as it runs. As chair of the committee that took the role of organising as well as participating in the day I found that I had to be very managerial and use feedback as the day went on so that I could make adjustments to the program as required. I believe that the project could have been improved through having more people organise and manage the event.
