Imperial Primary reading is our journey

The Scouting-in-Schools team at Imperial Primary aimed to experience the Literacy Adventure from the learners’ perspective while helping children access library resources. Roslynne Jansen explained that the project encouraged children to explore books, gain confidence, and discover topics they hadn’t encountered before. By making literacy engaging, the initiative aimed to cultivate reading habits, improve comprehension, and support learners in building lifelong skills.
Learners explored library card registration, book classification, reading and writing short stories, dictionary use, and understanding word meanings. Yeboneers guided them through interactive exercises, fostering teamwork, curiosity, and comprehension. Activities were structured to ensure all learners, including those who lost library cards, could participate fully and gain literacy skills while enjoying the process.
Roslynne Jansen observed that reading is essential in everyday life and that early literacy provides lifelong benefits. The project showed that children engage enthusiastically when given support and access to resources. Challenges included limited parental feedback, but the experience reinforced the importance of mentorship, practical guidance, and fostering a love of reading from a young age.
