Growing the seed of learning at “Emyezweni”.

Lwandle is a township rife with unemployment, poverty, crime and drugs. In the heart of it lies a preprimary school called Emyezweni that provides for just undre 100 children up to grade R and then a Grade 1 homework class. We wanted to support their reading and learning opportunities by contributing to their library and play corners, and give the Grade R learners supplies and their own reading book to start their 'Big School' prepared.
The 2nd Somerset West Cubs learned Design Thinking. They ran a book and educational toys drive and got 97 books and 15 puzzels. The volunteers negotiated with suppliers and bought extra books ensuring each grade R learner got their own pencil case and book. Also 100 tubes of toothpaste, 63 toothbrushes, and sweets were donated. The Cubs made christmas cards for each child. A volunteer dressed up as Santa and the gifts were handed to the school and the learners.
The Cubs learned how to use design thinking to find and solve a local challenge. They learned to give what they don't use anymore to bless others with items they desperately need. They also learned that it feels good to give to others and not to take things for granted. We blessed 99 learners and teachers but thousands more children will be benefitted from the books and toys donated to the school in the years to come.
