Flow with Dignity:Mama Ngina School Pad initiative
My motivation came from the desire to promote dignity, confidence, and equal opportunity for young girls. I’ve seen how period poverty silently affects education and self-esteem, especially in under-resourced schools. As a Scout and community leader, I felt compelled to take action ,because no girl should have to miss school or feel ashamed because of her period. This project was my way of turning empathy into impact.
As part of a menstrual health initiative, I helped lead a pad donation drive at PCEA Mama Ngina Primary School. We held awareness sessions with the girls, providing not just sanitary pads but also vital education on menstrual hygiene. The goal was to empower them, reduce school absenteeism, and break the stigma around menstruation. It was inspiring to see their confidence grow through this simple yet powerful act of support.
I have acquired Leadership skills through my engagement in this initiative. I have learnt how to plan and coordinate a meaningful community project. Additionally, my Empathy skills have improved, with an increased understanding of the challenges girls face with period poverty. I have also improved my public speaking skills and facilitation of awareness sessions. Having worked with partners and volunteers to achieve a shared goal, I have also harnessed my teamwork skills. Lastly, I have an increased understanding of the SDGs, and how local actions like mine support the achievement of global goals like health, education, and gender equality.
