Community Sapling Distribution Program

I was inspired to start this project after seeing the noticeable decline in tree cover and green spaces within our local area. This change directly impacts our community's air quality, biodiversity, and ability to cope with extreme weather. I wanted to take direct, practical action to restore our local environment and improve the future for everyone here.
The project focused on Thenagama Primary School. I first secured 80 native plants and coordinated the initiative with the school administration. The execution was straightforward: the 80 saplings were successfully distributed to students and their parents during a special event, directly engaging families in the local effort to increase our native tree cover.
One of the key lessons was the importance of community buy-in and education. We learned that simply giving out the saplings was not enough; providing a concise training session on plant care was essential to ensure the longevity of the project's impact. Furthermore, we realized the logistical challenge of procuring specific, high-quality grafted saplings and will focus on better nursery partnerships in future projects to scale our efforts more efficiently.
